New Energy Cargo: Routing NEVs, Batteries and Solar from Yiwu to Santos

China's "new three" exports — electric vehicles, lithium batteries and solar equipment — need different containers, different carriers and different destination handling. Here is how we route them from Yiwu to Santos and Buenos Aires.

New Energy Cargo: Routing NEVs, Batteries and Solar from Yiwu to Santos

Five years ago, an NEV shipment was an unusual booking. Today, electric vehicles, lithium battery packs and solar equipment make up a third of our weekly sailings to Santos and Buenos Aires. Each of the three needs a different container, a different carrier and a different destination handling plan.

Electric vehicles. Most of our NEV shipments use ro-ro or frame containers, depending on whether the buyer wants the vehicle driven or crated. We photograph the SOC (state of charge) at the consolidation point, disable connected services where required, and prepare the Brazilian RUC code for the destination broker. Vehicle securing photos go to the consignee side before sailing, not after.

Lithium battery packs. Larger packs for solar storage go as Class 9 dangerous goods on standard container vessels, segregated from incompatible cargo and at a controlled SOC. We use carriers with proven DG experience on the China-East Coast South America rotation, and we file the IMO declaration before sailing.

Solar equipment. Panels, inverters and mounting systems need humidity protection for the long ocean crossing — corner protectors, pallet shrouds and a desiccant layer. Frames and rails go on separate pallets to prevent transit damage. The destination partner unpacks and consolidates at the bonded warehouse before inland dispatch.

The route choice matters. Direct sailings from Shanghai or Ningbo to Santos are faster but more expensive; transshipment via Singapore or Colombo is slower but more flexible on volume. We pick the route after reading the customer's inventory schedule, not the other way around.

What ties the three together is planning. Each new energy consignment needs a dedicated operator from inquiry to inland — and that is exactly what we run on every Yiwu-to-Santos booking.
